A normal serum zinc level indicates adequate circulating zinc for basic physiological functions. However, like magnesium, serum zinc is not fully reflective of intracellular and tissue zinc status — true functional zinc deficiency can exist with normal serum levels. If symptoms of zinc deficiency persist, RBC zinc or alkaline phosphatase (zinc-dependent enzyme) can provide additional information.
Very low zinc represents noticeable deficiency affecting hundreds of enzymatic and structural processes. Zinc is essential for the function of over 300 enzymes, immune cell function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, taste and smell, and brain neurotransmitter balance. Critical zinc deficiency may contribute to noticeable immune suppression, impaired wound healing, taste loss, growth failure, and significant psychiatric symptoms including depression and psychosis vulnerability.
