Hematocrit measures red blood cell volume. Ferrets have a relatively high hematocrit compared to other small mammals. Normal levels indicate no anemia or dehydration.
Anemia in ferrets can result from blood loss (adrenal gland disease can cause blood loss), chronic disease (lymphoma, inflammatory bowel disease), or bone marrow suppression. Aleutian disease virus can cause immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.
Your veterinarian will investigate the cause. Adrenal disease and lymphoma are common causes of anemia in older ferrets.

Ensure your ferret has constant access to fresh water. Your veterinarian will check hydration status.
