PTT measures the intrinsic pathway of coagulation (Factors VIII, IX, XI, XII). A normal PTT combined with a normal PT indicates the full coagulation cascade is intact.
A shortened PTT is often an artifact of sample collection or early clotting activation. It is not generally a cause for concern.
No action needed unless the pet has clinical signs of excessive clotting (a clot forming).
Canine PTT: 9 seconds (Low)PTT measures the intrinsic pathway of coagulation (Factors VIII, IX, XI, XII). A normal PTT combined with a normal PT indicates the full coagulation cascade is intact.
No action needed.
Canine PTT: 15 secondsA prolonged PTT (especially with normal PT) suggests a deficiency in the intrinsic pathway factors: Hemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) or Hemophilia B (Factor IX deficiency). It can also be caused by von Willebrand disease, DIC, or noticeable liver disease. A prolonged PTT + prolonged PT often suggests DIC or widespread clotting factor depletion.
Your vet may perform specific factor assays to differentiate between hemophilia A and B. If both PT and PTT are prolonged, DIC or liver failure should be considered. DIC is a life-threatening emergency requiring urgent treatment.
