Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This baseline reading shows resting adrenal function.
Low baseline cortisol can be seen in hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease), especially when paired with a poor post-ACTH response. Some dogs on corticosteroids or ketoconazole will also have suppressed cortisol.
Your vet will evaluate the post-ACTH stimulation result. If both are low, an Addison's diagnosis is suspected. A stim test is needed to confirm.
Canine pre-ACTH cortisol: 0.7 µg/dL (Low)Cortisol is a stress hormone produced by the adrenal glands. This baseline reading shows resting adrenal function.
No action needed. The adrenal glands appear to be functioning normally at rest.
Canine pre-ACTH cortisol: 2.8 µg/dLHigh baseline cortisol may indicate stress during the blood draw, chronic illness, or early hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's disease). It should not be interpreted alone.
Follow up with the post-ACTH stimulation result. A high post-cortisol is needed to confirm Cushing's. If your dog was very stressed, a repeat test on a calmer day may be recommended.
