Mustelid adrenal panel: normalElevated sex hormones (estradiol, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione) indicate adrenal gland disease. This is very common in pet ferrets, especially neutered individuals. It causes hair loss (alopecia), itching, vulvar swelling in females, prostate enlargement in males, and can lead to life-threatening anemia from bone marrow suppression.
Treatment options include a deslorelin implant (Suprelorin), melatonin implants for hair loss, or surgery (adrenalectomy) to remove the affected gland. Most ferrets respond well to medical management with deslorelin implants.
