Ketonuria in cats is most commonly caused by diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). It can also occur with hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease), which causes starvation-like metabolism. Both conditions are serious.

What to do:

If your cat has diabetes and ketones are present, seek emergency veterinary care. DKA requires aggressive treatment with fluids and insulin. In non-diabetic cats with ketones, hepatic lipidosis is a strong possibility and requires nutritional support.
