How to download your 23andMe raw data
Step-by-step for getting your 23andMe raw .txt file.
Steps
- Sign in at 23andme.com on a computer (the mobile app doesn't expose raw download).
- Click your name (top right) → Browse Raw Data.
- Click the Download tab.
- Confirm your password.
- 23andMe emails you a download link (within a few minutes). Click the link.
- Save the file — it’s a .txt or .zip. Don’t open or modify it.
Then upload to Vogelview
- Go to Upload.
- Choose DNA and drag the file in. We auto-detect 23andMe format.
- Parsing takes 30–90 seconds for a typical 23andMe file (~600,000 SNPs).
Troubleshooting
- File looks empty in our preview — that's expected; 23andMe files are header-heavy. The parse step reads it correctly.
- "Format unknown" — make sure you uploaded the raw data file, not the consumer-facing PDF report. The raw file has lots of rs-prefixed identifiers.
